In The Escapists, your task as an inmate is to plot an escape route, all while under the watchful eyes of ever-suspicious prison guards.

The tutorial is basically an elaborate ruse, providing an interactive step-by-step guide on how to break out of the intro lockup. You won’t find a party with varying sets of skills though - you’ll have to escape all on your own, using the tools found within the prison and nothing more. Using said menus you can pick up new gadgets, combine and craft, and check your statline.

It’s a puzzle game, plain and simple, with old school JRPG-like menus to boot.

Whether you’re Shawshanking it or divining an elaborate Michael Scofield-esque Prison Break scheme, the prison is your oyster, as the game is very open-ended in nature.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to escape from prison by any means necessary. If you’ve ever seen the intro to Kenan & Kel, that’s basically how Escapists works. There can be several types of items ranging from weapons to tools which can aid the player in escaping, smuggling and fighting. In The Escapists 2, you are able to bring up the crafting menu by pressing “C”, or accessing your inventory and moving to the crafting tab (console versions). Steam Leaderboards – Once you have escaped see how you fared against other successfully escaped players! Prison Editor – Create from scratch your very own confinement masterpiece and share it with the community! The player can craft items by pressing the “9” key on the keyboard or clicking the “craft” button on the right side of the screen after gathering the necessary ingredients. Each prison also has its own unique set of personalities to get the measure of, in terms of fellow inmates and guards of varying demeanours. They all have regularly scheduled meal times, assemblies, and exercise periods, and if you miss any of them you’ll be noticed. Turning his descriptions into a tutorial is a neat presentational trick, but also a great way to get across the basics of what is actually quite a complex game.Īlthough each prison has different layouts and procedures the first thing you need to do when starting out at any of them is learn their routines. The game starts off with a clever flashback, where your ex-jailbird explains how he escaped while relaxing on a tropical-looking beach. But right from the off it’s obvious that this is a considerably more ambitious production.

The Escapists 2 has exactly the same premise as the original, and so even with the promise of 10 different prisons to escape from you might worry that the concept is being stretched too far to justify a full sequel.
